Our Journey

Urban Village started its journey with a quest to explore the exciting artistic possibilities hidden in the heartland of rural Bengal. The idea was to connect to the roots and infuse a contemporary touch in them. Eventually, the yearning led to a discovery of vast range of art works in form of dhokra, batik-leather, jute, terracotta, sitalpatti and many others.

This marked the beginning of our tireless and unending effort to preserve and promote Bengal’s rich artistic legacy. It involves development of handicrafts through innovative designs and new applications to transform them in unique utilitarian products. Today, Urban Village is a Self-Funded Organisation that not only fosters exclusive artistry but champions the cause of the deprived artisans too. We believe that the best way to help our artisans is by developing a market for their craft and by training them in new techniques and applications.

Our gifted designers interact directly with artisans and craftsmen, traveling to the interiors and villages. They conduct workshops, which enlighten the crafts people on new designs, color and dyes, preservation techniques, etc. This way the crafts retain their inherent rawness, ingenuity, and beauty yet serve as everyday utilitarian products. We thrive to merchandise these highly creative products with a reasonable pricetag.

Thus, Urban Village continues to bolster the vast heritage of Bengal crafts by developing and promoting these handicrafts into the quality and design conscious global market.
